A Brief Overview
A Mammography Technologist performs specialized X-ray examinations of the breast to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of breast cancer, ensuring patient comfort and safety while accurately positioning the breast for optimal image quality, all under the direction of a radiologist; requiring a high level of technical expertise and patient care skills to produce high-quality diagnostic images.
What You Will Do
- Performs mammography testing and procedures on patients.
- Performs quality mammograms following prescribed techniques, with minimal radiation exposure to patient and self.
- Knowledge of MQSA, required QC procedures and required patient outcomes tracking.
- Able to perform all applicable equipment quality control.
◦ Accurately records all requested database / log records
- Assists radiologists as needed.
- Consistently follows hospital and department policies and protocols
◦ Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (HIPPA) and facility policies
- Takes responsibility for self development and supports learning environment.
- Provides age-specific care to neonates through geriatrics.
- Consistently follows hospital and department guidelines for patient identification and safety.
◦ Adheres to ALARA, Image Gently and Image Wisely standards
◦ Adheres to hospital mammography safety standards
- Effectively follows directions to maintain compliance with State and Federal Agencies.
◦ Effectively follows directions to maintain department readiness based on DNV standards

◦ Proficient at instructing students and new staff members after 1 year experience.
Additional Responsibilities
- Uses administrative skills to contribute to the successful operation of the department by entering and completing correct billing codes in the RIS and on patient billing sheets.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Qualifications
Education Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited 2-year program in a school of Radiologic Technology (Required)
Experience Qualifications
- Registered X-ray technologist with at least one year experience (Preferred)
- Registered Mammography technologist with at least one year experience (Preferred)
- Proficient at instructing students and new staff after one year experience (Required)
- Clear knowledge of modality specific equipment computers, pacs, EMR and RIS (Required)
- Must demonstrate ability to work independently (Required)
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems as they arise (Required)
- Clear knowledge of imaging and exam protocols (Required)
- Excellent knowledge of imaging and exam protocols (Preferred)
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of X-Ray unit, computers, wheel chairs, O2 tanks, immobilization devices, PACS and radiology information system. (Required proficiency)
- Ability to operate mammography equipment. (Required proficiency)
- Knowledge of QC and MQSA standards. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Active certification from American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) Required
- Registered Technologist Mammography (ARRT-M) (Required within 1 Year) and
- Active License from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) (Required Upon Hire)
