Job Description & Qualifications
The Pharmacy Technician 2 is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 2 functions in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
What You Will Do
- For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• Accurate preparation of patient medications including non-sterile products and sterile products (including chemotherapy and TPN).
• Accurate and timely delivery of patient specific medications.
• Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock.
• Orients and trains new staff. - For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
• Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
• Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience. - For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 2, activities include but are not limited to:
• Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
• Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
• Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
• Duties may include those addressed above in the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Essential Functions. - For Infusion Pharmacy Tech 2, Infusion Technician Essential Functions align with Inpatient Technician Essential Functions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
- For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.
- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
- High School Equivalent / GED (Required) and
- Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician program. (Preferred)
Work Experience
- Prior experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or community setting. (Preferred)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Understanding of metric system and basic math concepts. (Required proficiency)
- Good communication skills are essential. (Required proficiency)
- Knowledge of personal computer, calculator, facsimile machine. (Required proficiency)
- Basic knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and automated dispensing cabinets. (Preferred proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) State of Ohio CPhT license (Required)
