A Brief Overview
The Advanced Care Paramedic is responsible for providing lifesaving and advanced interventions to patients at on-site locations and/or during transport. Serves as the principal paramedic for specialty care and ALS transports. This position requires a team based approach where the paramedic is expected to have at least three years of experience in a busy 911 ALS EMS system or one year experience as a full time UH EMS-I Paramedic. The Advanced Paramedic will be required to complete both didactic and experiential learning during orientation and demonstrate and ability to care for adult and pediatric during Specialty Care transports, on-site care interventions for Acute Hospital, home visits, Industrial Health locations, correctional health service locations, and event medicine. The Advanced Care Paramedic is expected to function at the highest levels within their scope of practice and to have demonstrated experience making advanced clinical choices. In addition, the Advanced Care Paramedic is expected to have a working knowledge of and experience with advanced equipment consistent with the standard competencies of the Advanced Care Paramedic scope of practice inclusive of vent management, use of high flow and advanced airway management. Ongoing training and education will be required as well as substantial investments of time obtaining and maintaining advanced certifications (ALS, PALS, ITLS, PITLS, GEMS, FEMA, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Tech, etc.). Additionally, the Advanced Care Paramedic is qualified for assignment to serve as a Clinical Care Technician consistent with the roles and responsibilities as defined by the position to provide support to in-patient clinical services such as cardiac catheter lab, ICU, Ed, and other clinical areas where the knowledge and skill of the Advanced Care Paramedic contributes to the patient care plan.
What You Will Do
- Practice critical clinical decision making and deliver care to patients at the top level of the Paramedic’s scope of practice in a team based care delivery model with the mission to provide initial and/or continuing care to stabilize patients in any environment (residence, clinic, ED, hospital) and as required, provide or facilitate transport via ambulance.
- Provide care and transport to adult and pediatric patients of all levels of acuity within the paramedic scope of practice including but not limited to STEMI, stroke, trauma, emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases, and high risk OB patients as an example.
- Must excel at working in an interdisciplinary environment inclusive of physicians, advanced practicing providers, nursing, respiratory therapy, and other members of the clinical care team.
- Completes appropriate charting and clinical documentation in a team based approach.
- Must uphold and maintain all necessary certifications and demonstrated competencies as described by medical direction and clinical leadership.

- Must be an unwavering advocate for patient and crew safety.
Additional Responsibilities
- Supports PR events to represent the team and University Hospitals as required.
- May be assigned to support inpatient clinical services.
- Staffs UHHS Event Medicine as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.

- Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Education
- Other Accredited Program Graduated from a state accredited paramedic program (Required)
Work Experience
- 3+ years experience in a busy 911 ALS EMS system (Required) or 1+ years experience as a Paramedic in the UH EMS Institute. (Required)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Medical Assistant skill set upon completion of Orientation (Required proficiency)
- Pharmacy Technician skill set upon completion of Orientation (Required proficiency)
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral (Required proficiency)
- Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills (Required proficiency)
- Demonstrates a professional demeanor when interacting with patients and customers (Required proficiency)
- Strong computer skills including all Microsoft platforms (Required proficiency)
- Excellent ability to perform triage in order to determine appropriate facility, bed type, service, etc. (Required proficiency)
Licenses and Certifications
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Upon Hire (Required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Upon Hire (Required)
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Upon Hire (Preferred)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) upon completion of Orientation within 90 Days (Required)
- International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within 90 Days (Required)
- Pediatric International Trauma Life Support (PITLS) within 90 Days (Required)
- Geriatric Education for EMS (GEMS) within 90 Days (Required)
- Federal Emergency Management Agency training within 90 Days (Required)
